“I don’t want to lose him. He feels so close to me. I’ve always felt this way.” - kishimoto the #1 naruhina shipper
that “he feels so close to me” line.
that supports the idea that naruto has feelings for hinata even before the last. cause, it means that naruto loves to be close to hinata (that’s why hinata feels that naruto is close to her). why would he want to be close to her? you know the answer
subconsicious love
They’ve always had a connected bond even when they didn’t talk or weren’t together all the time she still felt close to him and when the pein arc came and he felt the worst pain ever it showed he also felt close to hinata, that’s why I love how kishi worded it

Literally nothing before or after that moment has ever made him react this strongly. Hinata’s apparent death made him lose control and completely break emotionally. He was not only willing to give up, but he was also willing to let Kurama destroy everything. In contrast, Jiraiya and Neji’s death only made him shut down.
The Invasion of Pain is arguably the most important arc for Naruto’s development if you ask me, all because of his reaction to Hinata being hurt.
