"I couldn't afford the dress, I couldn't afford the hoopla. So I went to the beach with my friends and we got a six pack."So, when Santa Cruz City Councilman Tony Madrigal approached Whittington, the owner of Classic Cleaners, to help out with a prom dress giveaway for teenagers who cannot afford the high cost of preparing for all the pomp and circumstance, Whittington immediately identified with the cause."I acted like I was too cool to go to prom, but secretly I really wanted to go," Whittington said. "I just didn't have the money. There is a special feeling when you get dressed up, especially when it's around the time of graduating high school. You are stepping into adult life, it's a transformation. That transformation can be at the beach with a six pack Cocktail dresses, or feeling good about myself with friends and class mates as we get ready to move on."The prom dress giveaway is now entering its third year. The first year plus size prom dresse, close to 1,000 dresses were collected, and last year the number of donations shot up to 1,800. For 2011, Whittington wants to gather 2 plus size prom dresse 2011,500 dresses for high school students across the county who simply cannot pay for a dress, shoes cheap Bridesmaid dresses, jewelry, accessories and a visit to the hair salon."I always noticed the need amongst low income and working class families," Madrigal said. "But this difficult economy makes the need even greater."In a full community effort ball gown dresses, different shops and individuals have donated accessories and solicited donations from designers with whom they work."We live in such an inspiring community," Whittington said. "When word gets out, people start donating jewelry, shoes cheap Cocktail dresses, special bras, boxes of makeup. It all just snowballs."The real reward comes from seeing the young women find their dresses, Whittington said."They just can't believe that we are giving the dresses away.
