ELGIN ― A line of more than 300 eager girls stretched out the door of the YWCA Elgin and down the block Saturday morning for the seventh annual Cinderella’s Closet event that connects area high schoolers with Cocktail dressesprom dresses donated by the community.Deirdre White, the event director and co-chair, said more than 5,000 dresses were available in the “boutique” presentation, held in the gymnasium of the YWCA Elgin cheap short prom dresses, on East Chicago Street downtown.“Just this week A-Line prom dresses, we received more than 300 donations of dresses,” White said Saturday. “We have more than 50 volunteers here today, and we work on this event every day of the year.”Formerly coordinated by the Junior Women’s League of Kane and DuPage Counties, Cinderella’s Closet is now a joint effort between the YWCA Elgin and Elgin Junior Service Board, said White, who arrived at 7 a.m. to find girls lined up outside the door. The event was held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a special time slot reserved for referred District 300 and District U46 students with extreme financial challenges.For a suggested donation of $5, each girl was entitled to select one dress ― along with accessories and makeup ― to keep. Styles are current; and many of the dresses, ranging in size from petite to plus, were new with tags. White said the project was developed to ensure that financial obstacles don’t prevent girls from attending what is a rite of passage in American culture ― prom.“We didn’t want to spend $400-$500,” said Ashley Jones, a senior at the Illinois Math & Science Academy in Aurora. “A couple of my friends are here, too, and already got necklaces and purses …?. It was a half-hour drive grad dresses, and the wait outside was almost two hours, but it was worth it.”For eligibility Formal dresses, girls had to be registered high school students with proof of enrollment. Funds raised through the $5 donations are dedicated to the YWCA Elgin.Because response to the cause has been strong in the past, dress donations come in year-round.
