Back when I sat down to have a bit of hands-on time with Driver: San Francisco I was enamoured and thought everything about it was fantastic.
And in the two months since, nothing has happened to change that. But now I’ve had some realisations which can only come with pumping several hours into the game, like when the geeky male lead in the high school romance movie realises the pretty girl is also quite vapid.
Make no mistake, Driver: San Francisco can be an extremely enjoyable game. It’s incredibly easy to waste away the hours either playing the ‘70s cop show story mode, doing the hundreds of challenges which litter the city or jumping online.
The story itself is quite simple – while playing as Detective Tanner, you’re hunting down the criminal Jericho after he escapes from the prison transporter hauling him across the city. Jericho ends up plowing into Tanner’s car, leaving him in a coma.
Tanner, unaware he’s in a coma, discovers he has the ability to ‘shift’ into other people’s bodies and take over them – but only when they’re driving so get those thoughts out of your head.
After playing through SF quite extensively I have a love-hate relationship with shift. While it helps the game have an original story, something which was probably needed as the last couple of games in the series appeared to be running out of steam, there’s a feeling it breaks the game.
You’ll quickly learn ‘escape these police officers who are chasing you’ or ‘apprehend the criminal who’s running away from police’ are a thinly veiled instructions to shift into every car in the oncoming lane and pelt those people with a hailstorm of cars.
Sometimes when you shift into a car, the occupants will be having a conversation (Tanner retains the look of the driver) and this will continue while you drive – only Tanner now conducts it and has to figure out what’s going on. These provide a respite from the ‘Wow, I can’t believe that happened, that guy is such a criminal mastermind’ dialogue which forms 90 percent of the game.
Something the Driver series has struggled with since its very creation is rubberbanding – where no matter what car you’re in, the police and anybody you may be racing matches your speed. SF still has this. Ubisoft tries to give the player the illusion it isn’t there, but it is.
Police cars will routinely drop off pursuit where two seconds earlier they were trading paint with you, but by far and away the most annoying and unforgiveable thing comes in the single-player races.
Over, say, a 20 checkpoint race you’ll be battling for the lead with the other cars for 18 of them, then all of a sudden all of your opponents will slow down dramatically – leaving you to hoon off over the finish line. On top of that, if you crash or stop for whatever reason, they slow down. Almost as though they are waiting for you, mollycoddlying the poor baby racer who slammed head on into a truck at 200kph.
Aside from that, and the fact nobody plays this game online for whatever reason, it’s a fun game and an easy way to while away the hours. It’s driving mechanics are the same as earlier titles, and for those who didn’t play the first few games this means burnouts and drifting abound.
